Nigerian Afro-pop star, Yemi Alade,  has emerged the ‘Best Female Artist’ of the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) for the second consecutive year.

Alade edged out other nominees, including her Nigerian counterpart, Tiwa Sawage, to win the trophy at the 2016 MAMAs held at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the ”Mama Africa” crooner also won the 2015 ‘Best Female Artiste’ of the annual music fiesta, making her the first female singer to win the award twice.

Alade made her musical debut in an all-girl group called Noty Spices in 2005, but her music became widely popular after she won the Peak Talent Show in 2009.

She later released her first single “Fimisile” under the Jus’ Kiddin’ label and is best known for her hit single ”Johny”.

Also, Star boy Wizkid won the ‘Best Male’ award and picked the ‘African Artiste of the Year’, the highest coveted trophy.

The ‘Ojuelegba’ singer also won the ‘Best Collaboration’ award with DJ maphorisa who he featured in the song ‘Soweto baby’.

Other Nigerian Singers who won awards at the event include ‘Tekno’ who got the ‘Best Breakthrough Act’ honour and  ‘Falz.’

South Africa topped the list of countries with the highest numbers of awards, carting six awards from different artistes.

The MTV Africa Music Awards , which is run by Viacom international Media Network Africa, recognises iconic musicians across Africa every year and celebrates Pan-African music talents with winners chosen by public vote.

The Awards, also known as the MAMAs, was established in 2008 by MTV Networks Africa, now Viacom International Media Networks Africa, to celebrate most popular contemporary music in Africa.

It was conceived and created by the SVP and MD of the MTV Networks in Africa, Alex Okosi.

Earlier, African artists had been included in the MTV Europe Music Award, where MTV Base Africa viewers voted for Best African artist in the 2006 and 2007  MTV Europe Music Awards.

The first awards show was held at the Velodrome in Abuja, Nigeria on Nov. 22, 2008 and was broadcast around the world on Nov. 29 in conjunction with Airtel and local television channels in Africa.
